NewSurg Laser Treatments
Laser treatments for the skin utilize different wavelengths and mediums to target specific issues or cells. One of the options available is KTP lasers – KTP stands for the potassium titanyl phosphate crystal used as the medium in these lasers. NewSurg lasers are KTP lasers that target vascular lesions on the skin to remove various pigmented birthmarks and skin conditions. Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics offers NewSurg laser treatments at our clinics in the Atlanta metro area.
What makes the NewSurg KTP laser unique is its precision, non-invasive vascular lesion removal qualities. NewSurg laser treatments use green light at a 532-nanometer wavelength to target vascular lesions. This specific laser setting targets only oxy-hemoglobin in the blood, bypassing the skin and tissue to remove the blood vessel creating the unwanted lesion. The blood vessel collapses and is reabsorbed by the body, removing the redness and pigmented lesion to restore a more even-colored skin tone.
NewSurg Laser for Vascular Lesions Treatment
The NewSurg KTP laser is a useful treatment for many different types of vascular lesions. Since it only targets the blood in the blood vessels that cause lesions, it is not harmful to the skin or other tissue around the lesion. There are a wide variety of vascular lesions that can be removed with the NewSurg laser, including:
- Port-wine stains
- Rosacea
- Telangiectasias (fine spider veins found on cheeks and near the nose)
- Venous lakes
- Cherry angiomas
- Scars
- Sun damage
- Pigmented moles
While other laser treatments can address these skin conditions, NewSurg laser treatments have some benefits. The treatment can be used on most skin types – some laser treatments are not recommended for darker skin. Plus, the treatment is well-tolerated, and most patients do not require anesthesia or numbing of the skin.
What to Expect During KTP Laser Treatments
NewSurg laser treatments can usually be performed in less than half an hour and do not require recovery or downtime afterward. Patients will be required to wear goggles to protect their eyes during treatment – many KTP laser treatments are performed on the face, neck, chest and upper body. The NewSurg laser treatment is performed with a hand-held device that targets the specific blood vessels related to the lesion being removed. A sensation similar to the snapping of a rubber band against the skin can be felt, but it is only mildly uncomfortable.
After the treatment, ice can be used to relieve any swelling or irritation. The area should be protected from exposure to the sun and abrasives. Our skin specialists will provide aftercare instructions to ensure the best results. Some blood vessels or lesions may disappear almost immediately, but other lesions may take a few weeks to fade. Most vascular lesion removal with KTP lasers requires up to three sessions for the desired effect.
Is NewSurg Laser Treatment Right for You?
If you have skin redness or vascular lesions that are noticeable, especially on the face, neck, chest or hands, NewSurg laser treatments may be a solution. KTP laser treatments are non-invasive and can be performed quickly during an office visit.
