Dermaplaning
Smoother, brighter and glowing skin can be yours with a simple cosmetic procedure called dermaplaning. This gentle, exfoliation procedure removes the top layers of dead skin cells and vellus hairs, or peach fuzz, on your face. You may not be aware of it, but even now, your face has layers of dead skin cells that are contributing to a variety of skin conditions.
Fine wrinkles, dull-looking skin and acne breakouts can be caused by these layers of debris piled on your face. The fine little vellus hairs may become more pronounced when you add makeup. All these conditions can cause you to look older. At Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics in Atlanta, we reverse the process by revealing the smooth, new skin beneath the dead skin cells with dermaplaning.
What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is an exfoliating skin treatment, also called microplaning or blading. A tool similar to a razor is used to gently scrape off the layers of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. This procedure removes dull, dry skin and scrapes away layers of sun-damaged skin. It can also reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles and acne scars. The short, soft vellus hairs on the face are also removed with this procedure. In some cases, dermaplaning can also get rid of the pockmarks on your face.
Safe and Effective Exfoliation
All skin types can benefit from dermaplaning. This painless procedure is a safe and effective method for removing the surface layers of skin that can dull your appearance. Underneath the dead skin cells is fresh, new skin that produces a healthy glow and a smoothness you will love.
Your foundation will glide on smoother, and skincare products will work more effectively once those top layers of dead skin are gone. As a result, you will have a more beautiful, youthful appearance. Your skin will feel baby soft without the use of harsh exfoliators.
The Dermaplaning Procedure
Scraping your face with a scalpel-like tool may sound discomforting; however, for most people, it is a painless treatment. A dermaplaning tool is used to scrape your skin at a 45-degree angle. The skin is gently scraped removing facial hair, layers of dead skin cells and debris from acne and environmental factors. The procedure is usually completed in 30 minutes or less.
You may feel a tingling sensation during the treatment, but you should not feel any pain. After the procedure, a skin-soothing product like aloe will be applied to your face. It is best to let your skin recuperate for about 24 hours after treatment before applying makeup.
Expectations After Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning does not require any downtime. You can have the treatment and return to regular activities afterward. You may experience a slight reddening of the skin, but this disappears after two or three days.
Since this is newly exposed skin, you will also need to protect it from harsh sun rays. Be sure to use a gentle sunscreen of at least SPF 30. Exposing your freshly dermaplaned skin to the sun could reverse the results and leave your skin sun damaged. Avoid pigment blotches by being diligent about wearing your sunscreen.
This is not a permanent procedure. You can expect the results to last about three to four weeks before needing another treatment.
While there are over-the-counter kits available for this procedure to be done at home, it is not recommended due to increased risk of infection, complications and possible injury to the skin. Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics provides safe, effective dermaplaning along with a variety of medical and premium aesthetic services.
