As part of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics offered free skin cancer screenings for its 15th consecutive year. In an effort to raise awareness of skin cancer prevention and risks, the practice coordinated the event May 7 at the Peachtree Road Farmers Market.
“There was a lot of screening and a lot of education,” says Dr. Jodi Ganz, managing partner of Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics. “I thought it was really fun this year. We distributed hundreds of sunscreen samples. And this being an outdoor event made it easy for people to talk with the doctors and helped spread the word.”
Student volunteers distributed sunscreen samples, while local dermatologists, residents, and physician assistants offered skin exams. When examining patients, the physicians used a standard form that is well known among dermatologists. It features a stick figure illustration, which allows the physicians to mark areas of concern for each patient. These forms can then serve as a reference point for any board-certified dermatologist when the patient schedules a visit.
“Dermatologists are familiar with these forms,” Dr. Ganz explains. “So the patient can share the form with their dermatologist and say ‘I was at a free screening, and Dr. Ganz told me to show this to you.’ The doctor can reference my comments on the form and treat the patient as necessary.”
Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics organized the event with the Atlanta Association for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery. The American Academy of Dermatology sponsored this event as a part of its Spot Me initiative to provide people with an opportunity to receive free skin cancer screenings, and increase education and awareness of skin cancer prevention.
Additionally, Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics participated in Northside Hospital’s skin cancer screenings at their Forsyth location on May 19. Dr. Ilyas, Dr. Gross, and H.A. Saunders PA-C participated in the screening event put on by the hospital.
