Mohs surgery aspires to remove skin cancer while minimizing damage to surrounding skin tissue. The surgery utilizes local anesthesia to remove skin cancer through advanced surgical techniques that require specialized training to complete in the outpatient setting. Throughout the surgery, a physician will sequentially excise small layers of skin to examine them for the presence of skin cancer under the microscope. The skin samples will be removed and examined until the skin cancer has been completely extracted. The procedure boasts a high cure rate. Since it only removes cancerous skin cells and preserves normal skin, the procedure protects skin aesthetics by decreasing resulting scarring. Mohs surgery is regarded as most effective in the treatment of basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, the two most common skin cancer types. The surgery can also be utilized for some melanomas and unusual cancer types.
Dr. Ilyas joins Dr. David Olansky to create a growing team of experienced Mohs surgeons to care for our patients’ surgical needs. At Olansky, to best serve our patients, we strive to be at the forefront of skin cancer treatment, and Mohs surgery offers a notable improvement to standard therapy. There is no longer a need to remove excess healthy surrounding tissue to treat some types of skin cancer, and the surgeons can confirm at surgery if all cancer cells have been excised. Mohs surgery improves our patients’ chance at a cure and drastically reduces the need for additional treatments, enabling patients to have access to superior treatments with increased accuracy and convenience.
