Summer is prime time for skin rashes. It is a season when families are more exposed to sunlight, insects, heat and other elements that can impact the condition of your skin. Skin allergies, or contact dermatitis, are especially high. If you notice a new or uncomfortable rash or skin irritation, it is important that you seek treatment right away. Here are some common summer skin rashes to be prepared for:
-
Heat rash
- This is commonly found on kids after a long day of playing in the hot sun. This “prickly heat” rash, also called miliaria, is harmless but can be very uncomfortable. A heat rash forms in areas where sweat ducts has been blocked and inflamed. This produces tiny red spots and a prickling sensation.
-
Sun rash
- Sun rash is different than a sunburn. For those that develop a sun rash, they are experiencing a reaction to direct sunlight. This may be due to a certain medication they are taking or a specific fragrance or dye. This type of summer skin rash is called photodermatitis. An itchy, red rash on the front of the neck and chest can be polymorphous light eruption (PMLE), a skin reaction to the sun that typically occurs in early spring or summer.
-
Skin allergies
- The summer months also include exposure to many common allergens, such as molds, pollens, plants and grasses. As a result, eczema may worse or hives can appear.
-
Insect bites and stings
- Bites and stings can be painful, but they are a temporary and localized reaction in most people. However, watch out for signs that you are allergic to the insect bite. Seek emergency treatment if you or a member of your family suffers from an itchy throat, increased heart rate or swelling in the face, lips and tongue after a bite or sting. This is an indication that you are having a severe, anaphylactic reaction.
-
Chronic skin conditions
- If you have chronic fungal infections, eczema or skin cancer, you may find that the summer months worsen or aggravate your symptoms. Speak with a dermatologist on how to take extra precautions in managing your skin condition during the summer.
