Dermatologists are often asked about the best products for skincare, and we’re happy to help where we can. Since everyone’s skin needs are different, we’d need to know your skin type to make precise recommendations — but we can give you a general blueprint for a healthy skin regimen.
As we’ve talked about in the past, your skincare routine doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective. In fact, if we had to narrow it down to just five product categories, here’s what we’d recommend.
1. Sunscreen
If you’re an existing patient of ours, this probably isn’t the first time you’ve heard us stress the importance of wearing sunscreen. But just in case, here’s a reminder: You should be wearing it every day (all year round), and it should be at least SPF 30. There are formulas available for all different lifestyles and skin types, too. From non-greasy, lightweight sunscreens to sports sunblock that will withstand vigorous activity, there’s a product out there for everyone.
2. Moisturizer
The holy grail of skincare, moisturizer is, like sunblock, a necessity for everyone. No matter your skin type, you’ll need to protect your skin’s natural moisture barrier by locking in hydration.
There are non-comedogenic solutions available for oily skin, while thicker creams are better suited for dry skin. If you have sensitive skin, a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer is best. Keep in mind that you may need to swap out products with seasonal changes, too: a thicker formula can replenish hydration when the air is dryer, but humid air calls for lightweight moisturizers.
3. Cleanser
From sweat to dirt and dander, our skin comes into contact with lots of germs each day. Just as you suds up the rest of your body, it’s important to cleanse your face to remove bacteria that can cause breakouts. Washing your face is also simply a part of staying healthy. With potential entry points for germs, your face is often the site where viruses and other infection-causing microbes try to enter.
If you’re new to the world of facial cleansers, it’s time to put down the bar soap and find the right formula for you. Again, the best product for you comes down to skin type. There are solutions available for oily, dry, and combination skin. Not sure about your skin type? We’ll be happy to give you an assessment at your next appointment.
4. Exfoliator
While cleansers remove surface buildup to keep your skin fresh and clean, exfoliators penetrate deeply to extract dead skin cells and other contaminants from your pores. The result is younger-looking, glowing skin. There are two main types of exfoliators available: chemical exfoliators, which remove buildup using acids, and physical exfoliators, which cleanse pores with manual formulas, like scrubs. Each has its benefits, but manual exfoliators can be too rough for some sensitive skin. We also specialize in in-office peels and facial treatments to deeply exfoliate your skin with professional-grade products. No matter which you use, stick to exfoliating just two to three times a week to prevent irritation.
5. Vitamin C
The products above will suffice for keeping your skin clean and healthy. If you’re looking to take your routine a step further with some additional nourishment, however, add vitamin C to the mix. This powerhouse product can benefit your skin in several ways, delivering extra hydration and brightening properties, protection against sun damage, reduced hyperpigmentation and dark circles, and increased collagen production. Vitamin C can be applied as a standalone product under moisturizer and SPF, but it’s also a common ingredient in many skincare serums and creams.
